EBMX X-9000 V3: what 50 kW buys, and three ways to order the wrong parts

The X-9000 V3 is the most capable controller we sell and the one with the most version traps around it. Displays, harnesses and heat sinks do not all carry over from V2 — here is what does.

The centrepiece is the X-9000 V3 Controller Kit. It is also the product we field the most pre-purchase questions about, almost all of them about versions rather than performance. So: performance first, then the three traps.

What the numbers actually say

From EBMX's own specification for the V3:

  • 50 kW rated continuous power
  • 120 V rating, with a 48–93 V working range (up to 22S)
  • 1000 A phase current continuous, 1600 A burst
  • Infineon MOSFETs, CNC alloy case, IP67
  • VESC-based firmware with Field Oriented Control, modified by EBMX
  • Integrated IMU for wheel-lift assist — programmable for launch control or anti-loop
  • Six customisable power levels across race and street modes
  • Preloaded tunes for 30+ motors
  • Two-year warranty

The practical read: this is not a "more amps" controller. The FOC firmware and the six-level tuning are what riders notice first — throttle that behaves the same on the twentieth lap as the first, and a street mode you can hand to someone else without worrying.

What comes in the box

The kit is genuinely complete, which is unusual in this category: controller, plug-and-play harness and mount kit, air-cooled heat sink in black, SW102T colour display, thumb throttle, Bluetooth module, and a 1-2 harness. You do not need to source a display or a throttle separately.

Trap one: V2 harnesses do not carry over

This is the expensive one. V2 wiring harnesses are not compatible with a V3 controller. Colored V2 heat sinks are compatible — so if you are upgrading from a V2, keep the heat sink and budget for the harness.

Worth knowing: every X-9000 shipped from July 2025 onward is a V3. If you bought recently, you have a V3 whether or not the listing said so.

Trap two: the display is version-locked

The SW102 colour display works with the V3 controller only — not V1, not V2. It also does not cross over from other ecosystems: a Talaria EggRider display will not drive an X-9000, and there is no adapter for it. The X-9000 uses the display that ships in its own box.

Trap three: bike-specific harnesses are narrower than they look

Each bike has its own mounting and harness kit, and the fitment windows are tight. The E-Ride Pro 2.0 harness, mount kit and bashguard is the clearest example — it fits the SS 2.0 with the updated V3 battery connector, and does not fit the SS 3.0, the SR, or a 2.0 still wearing the old connector. Check your battery plug against the product photos before ordering.

Not every bike gets the full 50 kW

Worth saying plainly, because it is the question behind most "will this make my bike fast" messages: the controller's ceiling is not your bike's ceiling. On a ReRode R1, for instance, EBMX's own maximum settings are 95 battery amps, 10 kW, 500 phase amps, 25% regen braking and 25% field weakening. Still a substantial gain — but it is 10 kW, not 50.

Bikes the V3 supports

Sur-Ron Light Bee and Ultra Bee; Talaria MX3, MX4, MX5 and XXX; E-Ride Pro SS 2.0 (V3 battery plug), SS 3.0 with or without breaker, and SR; ReRode R1; and QS138 motor builds.

Going further than the controller

If you are chasing heat under sustained load, there is a liquid-cooled heat sink for the X-9000. And if the motor is the limit rather than the controller, the XTA-60 Talaria motor kit is the next step — a 55 mm stator rated 40 kW peak under load testing at 90 V and 1000 phase amps, with EBMX measuring 35 kW real-world on a 72 V battery with a 16-inch rear wheel and a 42T sprocket.

The XTA-60 includes hardware for the Sting MX3 and Sting R MX4. For an MX5 you also need the MX5 motor mount adapter kit, sold separately.
